Here comes the sun. Better protect yourself!

Skin cancer (melanoma) is the most common form of cancer and one in five Americans will develop some for of skin cancer during their lifetime. And the primary cause of skin cancer is exposure to the sun’s rays (tanning beds too).

“But I like the sun!”

We know. Fun things happen in the sun – beach stuff, golf, barbecues – and you don’t have to give them up. You just need to be smart and protect yourself:

• Limit the time you spend in the sun.

• Apply sunscreen liberally and reapply about every two hours.

• Wear hats that cover your entire head and neck area.

• And wear sunglasses too! UV rays are damaging to your eyes.

Check your skin

On a regular basis, check your skin for things like a new growth or patch of extremely flaky/dry skin, a mole or dark spot that seems to be growing, or sores that reoccur, or won’t heal. If you find anything that concerns you, schedule an appointment right away.

Good news – melanoma is treatable!

When skin cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate for melanoma is almost 99%. (Which is why self-checking is so important.

Take the advice of The Skin Cancer Foundation. Have a dermatologist perform a full-body skin exam at least once a year.

If you’d like more information, or a referral to a dermatologist, you can call MetaClinic at 844-774-HEALTH (4325) and we’ll be happy to refer a dermatologist and even schedule the appointment for you.
